Starwind & Hawking is the business enterprise of Gene and Jim prior to the events of Outlaw Star (and throughout the events as well). The business takes advantage of Jim's mechanical skills, and Gene's martial skills as a for hire mechanical repair and bodyguard service. It is through contracting with Starwind & Hawking to provide bodyguard services that Gene and Jim first meet Hilda.
