Original Animation Video or Original Video Animation, commonly abbreviated OAV or OVA, respectively, are usually shorter series, often not based off of a specific manga, but it's not a hard-and-fast rule. Most OAVs are 6 episodes or fewer in length, and to make up for this, the individual episodes are usually longer than your average anime episode.

Not knowing what else to shove into this article, I'll just list a few OAVs.

In order of number of episodes.

  • Puni Puni Poemi (2 episodes) - You know how Excel Saga episode 26 is the rest of Excel Saga on crack? Well, this is Excel Saga episode 26 on crack.
  • Dragon Half (2 episodes) - Legend has it that the creator would have made more but was arrested on drug charges after the first two. Feels like a parody of Slayers.
  • Mai-Otome 0 ~S.ifr~ (3 episodes, 1 released so far) - A prequel to Mai-Otome.
  • Mai-Otome Zwei (4 episodes) - Zwei is German for "two". As could be inferred from that, it's a followup to Mai-Otome.
  • FLCL (6 episodes) - Um, yeah. 6 episodes of pure craziness. Shut your mind off and enjoy.
  • eX-Driver (6 episodes) - Set in the future, mankind has given up driving and has AI cars to take them places. However, there are bugs in the AI that occasionally cause AI cars to go out of control. Enter the eX-Drivers, people who are skilled enough to drive gasoline cars. They chase down and stop the runaway AI cars. Features some really nice cars, like the Lotus Europa, Lancia Stratos, and the Caterham Super 7. Episodes are 30 minutes. Also has a movie which, despite being set at a race track, is still not about racing.
  • Mnemosyne - Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi (6 episodes, 4 released so far) - Can be summed up as "Tits blood gore tits explosion lesbians awesome tits blood wrapped into a sci-fi mystery thriller package." Episodes are 45 minutes. Comes highly recommended from this editor.
