Melfina is believed by some to be a bio-android, though her true potential and exact nature are unknown. She was stolen from the Kei Pirates along with the XGP by Hilda and hidden, enclosed in a cold storage case, in a barn on Sentinel III. When Gene and Jim force Hilda to give them the code to access the case, Melfina is revived and emerges unclothed and weeping. It is apparent that she does not know the meaning of her creation or whom is responsible. Once Gene has possession of the Outlaw Star, he makes a promise to Melfina to discover the purpose of her existence and the meaning behind her strange ability to act as the ship's navigation system.
Physically she is quite fragile, but as the crew encounters the pirates' agents again and again, it becomes clear that Melfina is essential to defeating them in ship-to-ship combat. She finds a niche in Starwind and Hawking Inc. as the crew's cook, which she grows to enjoy. Her personality is kind and gentle despite having so many unanswered questions, and together with Gene and the rest of the crew she embarks on a journey of discovery, adventure and danger.

Melfina USD02C is a bio-android created by Professor Gwen Khan with the express purpose of navigating the Galactic Leyline. She is not conciously aware of this purpose, it only becomes known after Kahn speaks a code phrase which disables her personality. She is a mix of current technology and 30,000 year old relics of the species that created the Leyline.
