Gene Starwind

The protagonist in the anime, Outlaw Star.

A man who lives by instinct and skill, Gene always carries a gun and a lot of attitude. His "whatever it takes" mentality and occasionally unorthodox approach to dangerous situations makes him as unpredictable as it does threatening. The Kei Pirates learn early on that he is a threat to their operations and a major thorn in their sides, as he unknowingly becomes involved with Hilda and the stolen XPG.

Gene is haunted by painful childhood memories. During his first visit to space with his father, their small pod is attacked by a grappler ship and Gene's father makes the decision to allow his son to escape in an escape pod with room only for one, just before their ship is destroyed, while he remains behind to die with the ship. As a result, Gene develops a deep resentment towards pirates and a phobia of space. When he eventually discovers that it was Ron MacDougall who is responsible for the death of his father, Gene takes it upon himself to avenge his father, leading to a rivalry between him and the MacDougall Brothers.
