The language of Japan, the Japanese language 日本語 nihongo has gained exposure thanks to the popularity of anime. While this probably has not significantly increased the number of people outside of Japan who speak Japanese fluently, it has had the unfortunate distinction of leading many people to think that they do. Thus have arisen sub-culture cliches like "SUGOI!!" "KAWAII~~!!" and "BAKA!!" Meanwhile, those who actually study the language hang their heads in shame as the reputations of all who show any interest in learning Japanese, whether genuine or not, are collectively dragged through the mud.
